Small acts of kindness
Each week our Oak Farm Montessori Middle School students step out of the classroom and into their community. The Helping Hands Outreach group volunteers at Sacred Heart Village, Shadarobah Horse Rescue, and Common Grace Ministries Noble County.
Two days after the active shooting incident in Kendallville, Angie Kidd, the Executive Director of Common Grace was scheduled to meet with our students. Because they knew she would be busy providing care and services to the displaced residents, they sprang into action with an alternative plan to still serve others, but in a different way. When Angie surprised them by attending, they shared their idea of writing thank you notes to multiple individuals, agencies, residents, and first responders. Students and teachers wrote over 20 thank you notes that afternoon.
Something so simple made such a big difference! Since the letters went out, students have received some responses back. One of those included a resident and her dog that were displaced in the events. She was touched by their note and wanted them to know. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Getting beyond ourselves to support and think of others is the big idea behind our middle school outreach program. Mission accomplished!
